Mid Summer Musing

Some how it is already mid July and the sultry days of summer are upon us.

June always passes by much too quickly, this year was no different. An exceptional line up of celebrations and milestones filled it though and I find myself reflecting on all it's sweet memories.

Our youngest child graduated grade eight, so after having a child in elementary school for 18  years that chapter has formally closed.

Our son completed his high school education and we'll wait to see what the next step is in his learning process is.

                                       (father and son)

Also in the celebrations were a couple weddings and an array of fun birthday celebrations.

                                          my sister,beautiful inside and out..

The weather here has been very dry, and we would all love a few days of good soaking rain.
Surprisingly the gardens are not doing too terribly, although I did notice the peonies and most perennials not having quite the luster they normally would.

I find nature's tenacity inspiring ...whether in drought or fair sunny weather the strength of it is marvelous, and not  unlike ourselves if we  plant our roots deep into real and lasting things such as faith in God and cultivating relationships with those around us.  We too can live lives of strength and purpose regardless of conditions that seem less than ideal.

I love summer's quiet days, actually I should clarify and say I have learned to love the quiet days this season has offered. Years past there was no such thing here, as five children of my own inevitably brought many friends and children through our doors. Countless lunches, cookies and popsicles were served, and the barn, sheds, woods and tree house were privy to many an imaginary game.

Those days have shifted slightly, while I never want a home where children's laughter doesn't echo; I know nothing remains forever in the same place. Time moves steadily forward and children grow up.
There is still children here from time to time, but I'm also thankful that mine are trying out their wings in various forms, knowing home is always a safe place to come back and land.

This post came together in a series of days...since than we have had some rain..yah, could use more.
I'm expecting two of my children who were away being counselors at a children's camp to arrive home soon with a barrage of laundry...
There is a huge banana cake cooling on the counter which will be turned into my son's 18th birthday cake...and the smell of chicken roasting in the oven.
My youngest is making something with the daisies she picked from my garden, and I am off to put a new coat of paint on an old chair I found.

the sign at daughter's graduation is a good reminder for us too...Right?

Treading Lightly

I have had a phrase repeat its self in my head this week...
It is this Hold lightly your blessings...

It was in my morning reading a few days ago, in a book of daily devotions by the inspirational Joni Eareckson. A secret sister from church gave me the book years ago, and recently I picked it up again and have thoroughly enjoyed it's wisdom.

Blessings are exactly that, they are gifts to us, and we value them by holding them lightly...not in a clenched hand, that could easily crush their intrinsic beauty,

rather in an open hand regarding their fleeting, precious worth.

Delicate treasures are these blessings in my life....
numerous and fragile like the leaves scattered across my front lawn, able to be separated at any given moment.

photos show tangible blessings, hearts hold intangible ones...

Instant Access

God ,Thank-you that when I call on you
You never say you're too busy.

You are never distracted and unable to hear me.
You don't say' what was that?'
I can't believe you'd ask me that!

You are there.
You hear every prayer on my lips.

Once!! The very first time!

It's that simple and that complex.

Thank-you, your daughter.

It really 'hit me' today when I was praying just what a beautiful blessing
our direct line to heaven is.

Must I Be Melancholy?

It's true, I had fully intended to leave that moody door called melancholy firmly shut.
Besides I am no stranger to this and I have learned if I open it even a crack, it seeps into too many aspects of the present, spoiling the potential of new moments waiting to be released.

But then, even the sky had opened up in torrents of tears.

So a few of my own  did not seem out of place at all.

Why does the beginning of a new school year always remind me so harshly , the passage of time and years in my children? Incredulously I realize that my baby is the only one left at the small school that I have had a child attend since 1998. Really?

I am happy though, as no thing can remain intact forever. Why would I want it too?
I love seeing my children discover their  potential and do things I have never tried, and succeed and sometimes fail.
I love giving them wings; this is a parent's prerogative.

The tragedy lies in letting them fly away with a piece of my heart.

First day of school jitters, concealed by beaming smiles. I just love that I get to be home and see them off with hugs and prayers.I am so blessed.

Still Life of my Week

A perfect week consists of equal parts people and solitude....

This was one of those weeks . I celebrated a birthday this week, not one that's a huge milestone just another jot in the story of life. My husband has often taken me out with friends on my birthday, bless his heart but I have explained to him just how much it means to involve the children in celebrating it. So this year they prepared supper; cedar plank salmon, rice, broccoli& salad. I WAS NOT allowed to help with it what so ever, so after sitting and watching them plunder about the kitchen, I asked if I could leave and visit my mother in law and they would call when it was ready. All their efforts were repaid as we sat down to enjoy a  very delectable meal.

Also had another delightful lunch and afternoon with my dear mother and sisters.Family is one of those special gifts I have grown to love and appreciate immensely. Each one of us so similar but different. each one of us connected in blood ties that form a strong bond. My sister who planned this event this year is likely the most creative person I know, and maybe even the most creative person .
Everything was lovely and scrumptious and truely a treat to the senses. After the meal we shared a piece of writing that inspired or touched us in some way.I left  filled , in mind and body.

The end of the week was a flurry of  appointments, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, driving to pick up daughter at college, making it home in time to go on date with hubby. How nice to be able to have children old enough to stay home alone. It's not all bad when they grow up.

Looking back on my week I realize just how much I am blessed with....
family, friends, health and most of all God's never ending  providence.

My life shines with God's radiant blessings
when my heart is the colour of joy.

Little Riches

It's the little things that make life rich.....I was reminded of this today as my one daughter was delighted to open the new tube of toothpaste.
Eagerly she called her sister to share her joy.It made me smile and I thought that really is what's so special about children. They know how to savor the little things.I made a little list of some of my "rich little things.." after supper kisses and" thanks Mom"
a smile that warms me,clean sheets, hot tea, lunch and laughing with my daughter, that phone call from friend asking if I'd like to go to Costco, hearing my favorite song, reading a book that my sister recommended, friends  who pray for me, skiing in fresh fallen snow, a dollar sale at the grocery store,
sunshine in winter, lemon candles, tidy closets, crackling fires, and the list really is endless.

The world is full of a number of things...
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.
